Wednesday, August 15, 2012

The Sumner County Health Committee is currently forming plans for the 2nd Annual Walk Across Sumner Campaign planned for 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin.

Last year’s project brought together over 1,200 individuals from the county with a goal to get moving and get fit.

Walk Across Sumner is a four–week walking and exercise campaign that encourages Sumner County residents to become physically active. The SCHC works to promote physical activity for Sumner County residents through the use of the outdoor walking trails/paths and greenways located throughout the county.

This year’s Walk Across Sumner campaign will kick-off on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Vol State and conclude with the Family Fitness Festival on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Gallatin Civic Center.

Sumner County resident and WSMV TV personality Holly Thompson has graciously come on board as the official spokesperson for the Walk Across Sumner campaign.

“Health Committee members are excited to have Holly Thompson join us to promote Walk Across Sumner. She is an ambassador for living a healthy and active lifestyle.” states committee member Hal Hendricks.

The SCHC wishes to invite organizations and individuals wishing to walk to visit the Facebook page at Walk Across Sumner to sign up. Everyone can walk, but if you would like to receive this year’s t-shirt you will need to pre-register the cost is $10. Money from the walk is awarded to Sumner County schools Physical Education teachers in the form of grants for physical fitness programing. The community can sign up for a chosen school they wish to support.

“The local community has really stepped up this year to provide support for the event in a big way,” stated PJ Davis, Health Committee member.
