Reader asks drivers to watch out for bicycles |

To the Editor:
Most automobile drivers follow the rules. Bicycle riders must follow the same rules as automobiles, stopping at stop signs, signaling for a lane change, stopping at red lights, being in the correct lane, etc. These are the laws that cars and bicyclists must follow.
What most automobile drivers do not know is that those of us who ride bicycles have four feet from the curb to the left.
Many states give bicyclists six, eight feet or more. Tennessee, however does give us bicyclists a full four feet. This law holds true on all roads except interstates, where cyclists are not allowed. There are more and more bicyclists all the time. |

Returning soldiers need our help and support |

To the Editor:
As a U.S. Army solder returning from Europe during the Viet Era conflict I know what it’s like to face a hostile environment.
In the 1960s it was anything but pleasant. Fast-forward to the present and we’re seeing not the hostility but lack of support for our young men coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Many with needs most of us can only imagine in a nightmare. And Washington is not providing the support they require.
Why?
I believe that the present administration is not supportive of our military and will use it as leverage to get more for their social programs. I find it disgusting and our elected officials should be holding their feet to the fire on it.

Haslam’s refusal to expand Medicaid a bad move |
|

To the Editor:
Has Governor Bill Haslam sold his soul?
Instead of immediately expanding Medicaid, Governor Haslam has decided to try to force the feds to allow him to let Tennessee buy private coverage for the state’s 175,000 uninsured working poor, including 35,000 veterans.
This is a one-state stand with very little chance of success and it jeopardizes Tennessee’s future social and economic well-being.
Immediate expansion of Medicaid would have created 20,000 more jobs and injected $10 billion into the economy by 2019. Tennessee’s state budget would have benefitted by $1 billion from 2014 forward. The feds would have covered over 90 percent of Tennessee’s expenses.
Without immediate expansion, 54 rural hospitals in Tennessee are likely to close and their doctors move elsewhere. |

Reader asks, “Are we a Christian nation?” |
|
|
|
|
Tuesday, November 20, 2012 |
|
To the Editor:
Back in our forefathers’ day, several Christian men got together and decided we needed laws to govern our people. Naturally, these Christian men turned to the Holy Bible for all the answers. After months of study, they finally finished and named it our Constitution, and if followed it would last forever. Our forefathers would turn over in their graves if they knew how it has been twisted around today.
Some years ago, a terrible blight settled over America through a series of events. Prayer was not allowed in schools or public places. The Ten Commandments, that God had written with His finger, had to be put out of sight. Stores were allowed to be open on Sunday.
Our Supreme Court called nudity a form of art, so that turned Hollywood and its allies loose. Pornography has destroyed the lives of our society as a whole. Millions of God’s babies would be slaughtered through abortion. The lottery and liquor stores were made legal. Abortion and pornography are two of the worst blights of all. America has lost her modesty.
On Judgment Day, will religious people be held accountable for not rising up in righteous indignation against these crimes? You know, silence gives consent. Jesus said only those who have done the will of my Father will enter Heaven. Do you think it is fair to ask God to bless America after the way we have treated Him?
These lines are just food for thought.
